Sensorium is a collection of 31 poems in five sections, each pertaining to one of the five senses (smell, taste, touch, hearing, and seeing). In this thesis I demonstrate the correlation between the senses and poetry through the spiritual rather than cognitive processes of unconscious knowing. The poetic forms range from imagist, ekphrasis and concrete to haiku and free verse. By taking the time to observe, explore and experience with my senses, I have come to find truths and relationships between reality and the imaginative state that fuels poetry. Theories on the subject of employing the senses in poetry by authors such as John Hollander, Denise Levertov, and Tony Hoagland shape this thesis and the understanding of poetry as an intuitive, spiritual quest.
