“Where the River meets the Sea” is a short story cycle that examines the dynamics and differences that exist between a coastal upbringing and an inland one. Place plays an integral role within the fabric of the cycle; each of the seven stories is set in a specific place in Nova Scotia ranging from the Southwestern tip of Baccaro, to the tiny inland village of Quinan. The protagonist, Maddy, identifies with the coast and her connection is manifested in the second section of the cycle where her father Llewellyn reveals their familial history near the water. The antagonist, Silas, was raised inland and does not share the same sense of home when he and Maddy are at the shore. Her inability to reconcile their differences and the message of persistence against the odds conveyed by Llewellyn both play a role in Maddy’s decisions about their relationship, and she ultimately finds resolution with someone new.
