“Sanskrit and Sunder” is a collection of forty free verse poems arranged into two sections juxtaposed to underline the major purpose in the collection which is to explore the relationship between togetherness and separation. The first section, entitled “Sanskrit,” based upon travels in India and Nepal bears witness to an intense cultural togetherness and movement away from traditional North American concepts of individualism. These poems work both on a visual and conceptual level to further ideas of connectedness and unison in both culture and nature. The second section of the collection, entitled “Sunder,” consists of poems expressing how issues of separation permeate perceptions and reflections on life in Canada. Both the form and subject matter of the poems in the second section reflect patterns of isolation found in North American culture, and how these manifest in the way individuals think about their relationships with others and with nature.
