The present study is a longitudinal examination of the effect of downsizing on employee workload, reward, fairness, value congruence, and levels of exhaustion. The study linked participant responses from an annual staff survey in a university sector from 2004 (pre-) to 2005 (post-downsizing) using a unique subject code (N = 126). Initial results did not indicate significant changes over time. Post-hoc analysis of the results by how long the departments have existed within the sector (i.e. more than three years (n = 59), and three years or less (n = 60)) was conducted. Results indicate that people in long-term departments experienced a significant decrease in workload congruence, greater predictability of exhaustion at T2 using workload at T2, and were more likely to cite a decrease in values congruence. The results indicate change processes should be mindful of the effects associated with organization tenure.
