This report describes the findings of a survey carried out by the writer during the summer months of 1965 of several occurences of high grade silica material throughout the province of Nova Scotia. Several localities were mapped and sampled, and a description of the various deposits is given herein. Also described 0 1-s. the state of the silica industry at the present time, and the specifications and uses of commercial grade silica. A classification of silica deposits is proposed which takes into account the physical properties of the material making up the deposit. Of the seven localities examined, 4 are on main-land Nova Scotia, and 3 are on Cape Breton Island. Those on the mainland include 4 occurences of Horton age sandstones in Pictou and Colchester Counties; two large quartz intrusives at west Country Harbour, Guysborough County; the paraquartzites of the White Rock Mills area; and paraquartzite and Vein quartz at Brazil lake, Yarmouth Co. The Cape Breton deposits were occurences of paraquartzites of the George River group at Aberdeen, Inverness County, and Leitches Greek, Cape Breton County, and an occurence of Horton Sandstone at Bucklaw, Victoria County.
