This study investigates work adjustment before and after the physical disability of paraplegia in order to determine whether an individual adjusts to the severe stress of a physical disability in the same manner in which he has adjusted to life's stresses in the past. It also investigates the effect of marital status, educational level, and pensionability on work adjustment. It is an independent thesis written in 1967 during the second year of study at the Maritime School of Social Work. The records of 57 male paraplegics between the ages of 25-60, registered at the Canadian Paraplegic Association in Halifax, as of July, 1966, were the source of data which were collected and classified for statistical testing of significance of change, using chi square. It was found there was a highly significant change in work adjustment following disability, and that this change was in a negative direction. Marital status, educational level, and pensionability proved to have no significant effect on work adjustment. It was concluded that there were important implications for social work practice, in regard to vocational rehabilitation, the socio-economic factors existent in society, and the significance of the work role to the individual's healthy functioning.
