Abstract

This thesis uses examine the social a Marxist and feminist approach to conditions that facilitates the participation of single mothers on welfare in collective actions in the struggle for their rights and identities as single mother families. The narratives of eleven black and eleven white single mother activists who live in Nova Scotia and who participate in collective action are analyzed in relation to Karl Marx's theory of alienation and Maria Mies' theory of housewifization. The collective struggle for empowerment of single mothers is an important research topic. Nuclear family hegemony is a cultural construction of the status quo that single mothers on welfare are challenging with grassroots activism. The home of single mother activists in context with the community which they live is examined as a crucial site of collective action for single mothers.
