The type-area of the Horton Bluff formation in Kings and Hants counties, Nova Scotia was studied stratigraphically to determine the geological history of this Lower Carboniferous non-marine formation. With minor changes, the stratigraphic colwnn of W.A. Bell (1927,1960) was retained. A study of paleocurrents revealed a source to the south and south-east on the mid-Paleozoic Meguma platform of Ce~tral Nova Scotia. This was confirmed by heavy mineral studies which suggest that the material composing the Horton Bluff formation was derived predominently from (1) granite of the Acadian orogeny (Devonian), from (2) metasediments deformed during the Acadian orogeny, and from (J) high rank metamorphic rocks which are apparently from a previous orogeny. A study was · made of detrital zircons in this formation and a scheme of classification based on degree of attrition and degree of fracturing is proposed.
