There continues to be a lack of inclusive and adapted physical activity options for children with disabilities in many local communities (Moore, Clapman & Deeney, 2017). Benefits of sport and recreation for children with disabilities have been shown to promote social integration, skill development, increased self-esteem, confidence, and increased awareness within the general and disability communities (Roult, Brunet, Belley-Ranger, Carbonneau, & Fortier, 2015). There are many factors that affect the participation of children with disabilities in sport and recreation. Parents of children with disabilities often raise concerns about a lack of inclusive programming and their children are restricted from reaping the benefits of physical activity (Cotterill & Brown, 2018). Parents have expressed concern related to barriers and safety which may be elevated for an activity like sailing. Sailing is often overlooked as an option for children with disabilities despite being well suited to accommodate all participants. This review will examine types of sporting classifications and options for individuals with disabilities, the benefits of different types of physical activity, summer camp program structures and options, parental perceptions of physical activity for children with disabilities, and explore sailing as a possible option.
