In Nova Scotia, Critical Incident Stress Debriefings have been and continue to be used to help correctional workers psychologically and emotionally rebuild after a traumatic event. Previous research, not specific to correctional workers, gives the process mixed reviews. The following study explores the literature around trauma, psychological debriefings, and the on-going debate concerning CISDs. Moreover, using in-depth interviews, this research focuses on the perceptions of five correctional workers relative to the process and outcomes of CISDs. The debriefings were reported as helpful with the exception of two experiences where failures in process and follow up diminished their effectiveness.
