Energy efficient long range communication in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a challenging issue due to limited power supply. Virtual Multiple Input Multiple Out- put (MIMO) techniques are used to provide energy efficient communication in a radio harsh environment. We estimate the virtual MIMO link communication costs for dif- ferent path loss factors and fading channels in cluster based communication. Then, we investigate virtual MIMO for fixed and variable data rates, random and fixed path loss factors, and different network densities. We also propose a routing strategy based on a virtual MIMO link. Simulation results show that virtual MIMO can be more en- ergy efficient compared to Single Input Single Output (SISO) communication beyond a certain distance, and it is efficient in fading conditions where random path loss is possible. Further, the virtual MIMO can prolong the network lifetime significantly compared to traditional SISO communication.
