Cardiorespiratory fitness refers to the body’s ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to deliver oxygen to the working muscles, and is made up of varying components. This paper will highlight previous research on the central and peripheral components of cardiorespiratory fitness in older and younger trained (T) and untrained (UT) individuals. The components of cardiorespiratory fitness that will be highlighted are maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), cardiac output (Q), stroke volume (SV), heart rate (HR), and the arteriovenous oxygen difference (a-v)O2diff .The effect of exercise training and age on these components will be highlighted. Following the brief outline of previous research, details of a cross-sectional research study will be provided. The purpose of this study was to compare the response of the central and peripheral components of cardiorespiratory fitness between T older male cyclists and UT recreationally active older males, during a maximal exercise test on a cycle ergometer. VO2max was assessed using a metabolic cart (ParvoMedics) and Q, SV, HR, and (a-v) O2diff were assessed using a non-invasive thoracic bio-impedance device (Physioflow). This study found that older T and UT male cyclists do not experience a secondary plateau in SV. Further, it was found that older T males exhibit a higher VO2max, Qmax, and SVmax than UT males. Future research should assess differences in SV profiles by mode of exercise.
