Abstract

The purpose of this analysis was to determine whether attitudes towards own aging (ATOA) are associated with successful aging (SA) in older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from adults aged 60 and older in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) 2010 wave (n=3,517). SA and its components (physical and psychosocial), and ATOA were measured using self-reported data. Hierarchical linear regressions were used to determine the association between SA and ATOA adjusting for covariates and health behaviours. Results: Significant associations between SA and aging attitudes were noted for all SA variables. Overall attitudes towards own aging were able to explain an additional 12%, 8%, and 12% of the variance in each of overall SA, physical SA and psychosocial SA, respectively. Conclusion: Positive attitudes towards one’s own aging are positively associated with physical and psychosocial SA and negative attitudes are associated with worse SA.
