Acadia Library History

alhThis collection of records concerning the history of the libraries at Acadia University consists of a variety of digitized material including images, letters, reports, promotional material, and oral history transcriptions. The majority of the original records in this collection are held by and accessible through the Archives.

Acadia's libraries have a history that can be traced back to the early years when the University was founded in 1838. In 1841, the Rev. John Sprott donated three books that would become the very first library holdings (Ingraham). Since that humble beginning, the library has seen many changes. Originally located in a room in the first College Hall, the collection officially moved in 1915 to its own dedicated space in the Emmerson Memorial Library (Ingraham). In 1965, the long awaited building for the growing collection was realized when the Vaughan Memorial Library opened its doors to the campus community (Acadia Bulletin, December 1965). In 1970, the Huggins Science Library was established across the campus (N. K. Jain, pers. comm.) and operated for many years until it was finally merged with the Vaughan in 1987 (Haliburton).

For more information about the history of the libraries at Acadia, please see the Acadia Libraries Through the Years project website. For access to original images digitized in this collection, please note the Accession Number field in the record if planning to contact the Archives.
